Meet the Open Source Leg
Inspired by a similar design philosophy as our Portable Caplex System, the Open Source Leg is the ideal hardware and software platform for exploring, developing, and testing robotic prosthetic ankle and knee control strategies — overground, outside, and in unstructured environments. High-performance actuation and control systems are on board and powered by a battery pack, meaning the Open Source Leg is as close as you’ll get to a product-like leg with complete customizability. The platform is tried-and-true, thanks to the combined years of experience of the original developers at University of Michigan, Humotech OSL customers, and broader community of open source developers. Our goal is to increase the accessibility and ease-of-use of the platform by manufacturing the device to our standards, providing professional support to our users, and pooling feedback to improve the design with each build..
In our burgeoning field, leveraging the prior work of others and collaborating effectively is more important than ever, requiring a common development platform to facilitate easy communication of ideas and translatability of work products. We welcome you to join our growing and supportive community as we innovate together toward a world where robotic prosthetic legs are more ubiquitous, more helpful, and more cost-effective than ever before.
Please contact us with your requests as we are actively considering expanding our offerings!

The History of the Open Source Leg
First released in 2019, the open-source leg’s free-to-copy design is intended to accelerate scientific advances by offering a unified platform to fragmented research efforts across the field of bionics. Now, for labs that need an off-the-shelf robotic prosthesis for research and development, Humotech provides an assembled version of the open-source leg, including warranty service and technical support.…
